Centro de Meditación: Las Pirámides. San Marcos, Guatemala
With every passing day the moon in the sky was growing a bit fuller and alerting me to the beginning of the Moon course (which begins and ends on every full moon) at the Las Pirámides meditation center. I had fallen in love with the peace and magic of this place during my last trip to Guatemala this pasty April (see BLOG entry from 27 April 2006) but was only able to stay one week then. My body could still feel the many late nights from Cuba so the idea of tranquillity and yoga on the shores of amazingly beautiful Lake Atitlan sounded appealing.
I arrive at Las Pirámides at San Marcos on the night of the full moon and am invited to join the monthly full moon ceremony held under the open sky. Although it is rainy season, the clouds had cleared and the moon and a bonfire illuminate the night as if welcoming me. The following two weeks were some of the most peaceful and tranquil in my life. With every day my body felt a bit more rested and my mind a bit calmer. The daily yoga, metaphysical teachings and mediation classes still left plenty of free time to sit back and relax, go swimming in Lake Atitlan, read a book from the spiritual library, cleanse my body in the pyramid shaped sauna or have a delicious tropical fruit juice. But things were to get better yet. After a few days I was approached by two Japanese girls who were also attending classes at Las Pirámides. They had decided to sign up for a 10 day massage training program at the nearby holistic center and were looking for a volunteer to practice their massage skills. Does life get any better? This was the question that repeatedly came to mind as my Japanese masseuses freed my body of many remaining tension during my 2 hour daily massage sessions.
It is unfortunate that so rarely we give our bodies and minds the chance to truly relax during our habitual and busy lives. But the fruits of such practice are incredibly rewarding. For anybody looking for a rested body and a tranquil mind I can highly recommend a retreat at Las Pirámides meditation center.
